As part of an effort to combat ticket scams affecting commercial air transport users in Mexico, two rivals, Viva Aerobus and Volaris, decided to join forces to combat fraud.
The two Mexican low-cost airlines launched a joint campaign focused on raising awareness among the general public about the safe way to purchase their airline tickets directly on the official platforms of both airlines and thus avoid scams.
This cooperation between two of the main airlines in Mexico was made possible thanks to their interest and commitment to try to eradicate the growing problem of fraud via social networks or telephone calls. “These attempted scams are committed by criminals who pose as representatives of the airlines, affecting the assets and dreams of traveling of many people who seek to buy their plane tickets,” they said.
They added that “in 2023 alone, Volaris and Viva Aerobus transported more than 58 million passengers, which has positioned us as the main targets of the wave of fraud affecting their users.”
“The greatest and best actions are those that are done in favor of people, in this case, our clients, leaving behind any rivalry or competition,” they said.
They explained that it was very important for Volaris and Viva to join forces to help stop this crime that affects many people, not only by stealing their money and their dreams of traveling, but also by stealing sensitive information, such as their personal data, which leaves them vulnerable to more fraud.
“By joining forces, we are sure that we will be able to reach more people and promote a change that will lead to the eradication of this crime that affects us all,” said Enrique Beltranena, President and CEO of Volaris. For his part, Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Viva Aerobus, said: “Efforts like this are born from our genuine desire to create a safer industry for everyone.”
The campaign went live on August 21, with a series of ads featuring Flight attendants from both airlines educating the public on how to avoid scams and purchase their plane tickets safely through legitimate means. It is hoped that through this effort, customers will be made aware so that before purchasing their plane tickets they confirm that they are on an official platform and channels of the airlines.
Half of the cyber frauds for the purchase of vacation packages that are detected throughout Mexico occur in Quintana Roo, Travel agencies have warned, regretting that very little is being done to combat this crime, as reported by REPORTUR.mx (QRoo destinations account for half of Mexico’s tourism fraud).
