An ATR-72-500 of the Voepass airline travelling from Cascavel to Sao Paulo has crashed in a residential area as it approached its destination airport. According to Globonews, all 62 people on board have died (58 passengers and four crew members).

Brazilian television station GloboNews broadcast images prior to the collision in which the plane can be seen spiraling as it falls, as well as a large area in flames after it hit the ground.

A plane with a capacity for about 70 passengers crashed on Friday in a residential area in the Brazilian municipality of Vinhedo, in the state of São Paulo, according to the Fire Department of the Military Police of this state.

Videos posted on social media show the aircraft spinning around in circles before crashing with a loud bang in the municipality of Vinhedo, near São Paulo.

According to São Paulo’s Secretary of Public Security, Guilherme Derrite, the plane’s black box has been found “apparently preserved,” which could help to determine the reasons for the accident.

Brazilian President Lula da Silva has confirmed the deaths of all those on board the plane and called for a minute of silence in their memory during the launching of a new Brazilian Navy frigate in Santa Catarina.
