The Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), led by Bernardo Cueto, is warning tourists about fraud when purchasing vacation packages for this summer, and has reinforced the “Verify and Travel” campaign.
“It is important to do what is necessary to protect consumers from fraud, and fraud continues to lurk among those looking for vacation options. We have done a lot of work in Quintana Roo, but it is necessary to also take the information to other states, which are the areas where travelers come from,” said the head of the entity.
Tourists are advised to check the agency from which they are going to buy vacation packages in the State Registry of Tourism and the national one. They also recommend not depositing money in personal accounts and buying on official company websites.
The campaign was created in 2019 due to the increase in complaints about fraud by ghost agencies, which through social networks offer packages below their real price and tourists want to take advantage.
Quintana Roo has a 50% return rate, which means that tourists visiting the state’s destinations for the first time expect safe and trouble-free stays.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxduring Easter, groups of cybercriminals pretended to be employees of the airlines Volaris, Aeroméxico or the Hotel chains Riu, Barceló or Vidanta and defrauded tourists in Mexico with fake vacation offers on social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTol and even WhatsApp, said at the time Salvador Guerrero Chiprés, president of the Citizen Council for Public Security and Justice of Mexico City.
