A rare tornado in Haiti injured more than 50 people and destroyed more than 200 homes, the United Nations reported Wednesday.

The tornado hit the community of Bassin-Bleu on Tuesday, leaving more than 300 families affected, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The agency noted that at least 10 people were seriously injured, and local media reported that they had been hospitalized.

He added that the Haitian civil protection agency and the Red Cross were the first to provide aid and are assessing the damage.

The civil protection agency said heavy rain is predicted in most of Haiti, including areas affected by the tornado, warning of possible flooding and landslides.
