President-elect Claudia Shinbaum has promised to strengthen connectivity at Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and comprehensively improve Mexico City International Airport (AICM).
“The impact of AIFA should be leveraged and reinforced as an alternative for passengers in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico (ZMVM), but also as a specialized cargo hub connected to a development corridor that integrates the State of Mexico, Hidalgo and Mexico City; and potentially extends to the port of Tuxpan,” reads the document “100 Steps for Transformation.”
Likewise, Sheinbaum points out that AIFA will have a second phase with an expansion of the passenger terminal, taxiways, platforms and an expansion of the cargo area, to reach a capacity of 700 thousand tons per year and 80 million passengers per year. However, experts assured El Financiero that this second phase will only be possible when AIFA reaches 19 million passengers per year, so it will not be this year since it is projected that it will reach 5 million by the end of 2024.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxIn May, President AMLO announced that AIFA would no longer receive subsidies for its operation because it was already profitable. He also stressed at the time that cargo airlines are very “happy.” (CDMX: AMLO cuts subsidies to AIFA when it becomes profitable).
“AIFA will not receive subsidies for the operation, because it has already started to make a profit and, in addition, the airlines that are in charge of transporting goods are very happy,” AMLO said at the morning press conference.
