AMLO’s hostility towards King Felipe VI continues

President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum has already announced the countries that will not be invited to her inauguration, including Spain, despite the significant boost it has given to tourism in Mexico. The reason is because she agrees with the request made by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) to King Felipe VI to apologize for the massacres and violence of the Spanish Conquest, who refused to do so.
“I also agree that there should be forgiveness, Pope Francis has already done so, and we must maintain relations with Spain and continue to insist on this, because the Spanish Conquest had many massacres and violence,” Sheinbaum said.
It should be remembered that on March 25, 2019, AMLO announced that he had sent a letter addressed to Felipe VI on March 1 of the same year, requesting that he ask, together with the Pope, for forgiveness from the indigenous peoples of Mexico “for the abuses committed during the Conquest of the country, 500 years ago, but Spain rejected it “with all firmness,” the letter stated, as reported by Noticaribe.
Other countries that have been excluded from the list of those invited to the inauguration are Ecuador and Peru. In the case of Ecuador, the reason was for breaking into the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas, who had requested political asylum in Mexico, which is why the AMLO government broke off diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
Spanish investment in Mexican tourism represents around half of Hotel rooms in destinations such as Cancun or Riviera Maya, and its role was decisive in the development of what has now become the economic engine of many parts of the country.
Major Spanish Hotel owners such as Riu, Meliá, Oasis, Barceló, Iberostar, Bahía Príncipe, Palladium, Catalonia, H10 and Princess maintain tens of thousands of jobs in Mexico, where Spanish airlines also distribute citizens of the country throughout Europe, such as Iberia, Air Europa, World2Fly and Iberojet.
On the other hand, Peru for Dina Boluarte, who is the replacement for former president Pedro Castillo, detained and imprisoned for trying to dissolve the Peruvian Congress and govern by decree and whom AMLO reiterated his support.
