According to the “Adecco Salary Guide,” workers in the luxury tourism sector earn an average of USD 825 per month, including tips, which places Quintana Roo in 31st place in terms of income among other destinations in the world, and which is why young people do not work in hotels that offer salaries that they consider low, according to Mario Machuca Sánchez of the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (Croc).
“For this reason, young people are no longer interested in working in the Hotel sector in Quintana Roo, which is why today there is a shortage of this workforce that has been sought to be filled with people from other states,” said Machuca Sánchez, as reported by Sipse.
Workers from countries that earn more than Quintana Roo’s salaries include those from Costa Rica, with salaries of USD 1,200 with tips included. However, they are only above Santo Domingo, the Bahamas and Cuba, according to the consultancy’s report.
Likewise, it indicates that the salary difference between Quintana Roo and other tourist destinations in the world is due to specialization. “In first world countries, workers are highly trained in customer service and that is why they usually receive better tips,” the same media outlet points out.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxworkers are being sought in the Hotel sector in Cancun to fill the staff shortage that remains after the pandemic and which is currently around 8%, said Jesús Almaguer Salazar, president of the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres. (Cancun: problems in hotels due to the still high lack of staff).
In this regard, the hoteliers’ representative highlighted the role of job fairs that are organised periodically and “that seek to compensate for this lack to some extent.”
