The recent news about the two American tourists who claimed to have been drugged at a Hotel in Costa Mujeres has taken an unexpected turn. State prosecutor Raciel López has declared that the tourists’ claims are unfounded, assuring that the toxicology tests carried out on the young women gave “clean” results, with no trace of fentanyl or any other drug.
According to the prosecutor, the case has been exaggerated and he said it was a simple case of alcohol intoxication. “There is no drug dealing here in Quintana Roo with fentanyl,” said López, suggesting that the girls made up the story due to their inability to pay the hospital bill to which they were taken. “It is ruled out that they consumed fentanyl in their drink,” he added, downplaying the incident.
However, for some media outlets, including diariocambio22, the position of the Attorney General’s Office has generated concern and criticism, apparently more concerned with protecting the image of the tourist destination than thoroughly investigating the complaints.
“The focus on clearing Quintana Roo’s name, even at the cost of discrediting the victims, leaves a bitter taste in a state where security and international perception must be treated seriously. This case highlights the complex relationship between tourism and security in the region, as well as the pressure to maintain an immaculate image in the face of growing concerns about violence and drug trafficking in Mexico,” the newspaper stated.
The website added that “the response from the Attorney General’s Office raises serious doubts about the transparency and commitment of the authorities to address in a fair and objective manner the complaints involving international tourists.”
How do I report it? REPORTUR.mxat the beginning of August, the Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo began an investigation into a possible crime against the health of two foreign tourists identified as Zara Hull and Kaylie Pitze, in the continental area of Isla Mujeres.
