The National Hurricane Center in Miami (NHC) placed the 430 kilometers of Quintana Roo beach in a danger zone due to the arrival of Hurricane Beryl on Thursday night. In turn, the governor of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, declared a Yellow Alert (moderate danger) on Wednesday as the arrival of the hydrometeorological phenomenon is imminent.
The hurricane is gaining strength and is expected to reach Category 5 strength as it passes south of Jamaica. However, the forecast by CNHM experts is that it will weaken to a Category 2 hurricane as it enters some point in the middle of the state, probably in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
Beryl is moving toward the west-northwest near 18 mph (30 km/h), and this general motion should continue, followed by a further turn toward the west on Thursday. On the track, the center of Beryl passed near Jamaica on Wednesday. After that, the center is expected to pass near or over the Cayman Islands and move over the Yucatan Peninsula late Thursday or early Friday.
Reports from Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph (230 km/h) with higher gusts. Beryl is a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some weakening is forecast during the next day or two.
However, Beryl is forecast to be at or near major hurricane intensity as it passed near Jamaica yesterday and the Cayman Islands early Thursday the 4th. Additional weakening is expected thereafter, although Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean.
