Surrogacy is a practice that is legalized in two Mexican states: Sinaloa and Tabasco, while two others explicitly prohibit it: Querétaro and Coahuila. In the rest of the country it proliferates until Mexico becomes a destination for surrogacy tourism by attracting more and more foreigners in their search.
In Mexico, this practice is promoted through social networks. These procedures are carried out by companies not established in the country, which may be transnational. The intended fathers and mothers hire them to act as mediators between themselves and the surrogates.
Mediation companies are agencies that can be virtual and are responsible for hiring different clinics to carry out the necessary medical procedures. However, in the country, there are also physical clinics that carry out the entire process, Cimacnoticias reports.
Academics, analysts and politicians such as the PRI representative, Blanca Alcalá, have raised the alarm about this practice that is spreading in the country due to the lack of adequate regulation and which constitutes a new form of human trafficking.
