The UNESCO World Heritage Committee has asked the Mexican government to carry out a strategic environmental assessment to calculate the harmful effects that the Train could cause.
Maya to the historic center of Campeche, to the archaeological sites of Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and Palenque, and to the biosphere reserves of Sian Ka’an and Calakmul, declared cultural heritage and
natural to humanity.

During its 46th meeting held in New Delhi, India, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, chaired by Indian Vishal V. Sharma, regretted that, although the construction of the Railway
Maya and its works are advancing rapidly, the Mexican government ignored preparing a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), as proposed by the International Council of Monuments and Sites and
the International Union for Conservation of Nature, advisory bodies of UNESCO.

In this regard, the Committee reiterated to the Mexican government the urgency of having the EAE to estimate the accumulated impacts of the Mayan Train on the exceptional universal value of these six
archaeological, historical and natural sites declared world heritage sites, which are now located within the route of this tourist railway.

Before representatives of the 195 countries that are part of UNESCO, the World Heritage Committee read the analysis and conclusions that its specialists and advisory bodies made of the
Maya Train and placed special emphasis on the situation of the archaeological zone and biosphere reserve of Calakmul, Campeche, declared a cultural and natural heritage of humanity in 2002.

The Calakmul archaeological site and biosphere reserve are within the route of Section 7 of the Maya Train that will run from Chetumal, Quintana Roo, to Escárcega, Campeche. In addition, the Ministry of National Defense is building a Hotel in the buffer zone of this reserve.

As reported REPORTUR.comthe environmental permit for the Maya Train for the road that connects the station with the Cancun airport is being processed in an untimely manner at the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), since the work that was previously a vegetation zone is 94% complete.
