If you ask the intelligence artificial (AI) about the main ethical debates it faces in its development, I would tell you that these include “responsibility for its decisions, privacy and data management, algorithmic discrimination, the impact on employment and the autonomy of machines in areas such as war and justice.

The director of the National Center for Artificial intelligence of Chili (Cenia), Rodrigo Duranpoints out that the biases -understood as the prejudices or conceptions of reality that can influence the results of the systems AI-, are the development that raises the most ethical questions in the world of intelligence artificial.

“If we are not aware or do not make specific practices to avoid the appearance of biases in the programming of algorithms, we are probably going to amplify that bias that was already in the area,” he explains.

Durán assures that the problem does not have so much to do with how he was trained, but rather with the database that he is given to develop.

Another point of view that the director of the Cenia warns to take into account is the impact environmental of the AI: energy consumption. “Republic Dominican and Chili have certain comparative advantages that could allow them to develop a stronger data supply industry, taking advantage of clean energy production,” he maintains.

Also, it details the capacity of the AI to affect the reality or alter it. “There is some concern about uses that we didn’t envision when the technology was created, but they end up being questionable.”

Developments to take into account

For him, generative models of language and the multimodal have increased explosively in recent years. “Continue looking at how they evolve not only as the text model but as models multimodalwhich are not so much the entry of data but also the output of data that will be text, images, video or audio; I think it’s something worth looking at,” he says.

AI in the Caribbean

From his perspective on the situation of the intelligence artificial in the Caribbean, “one detects that, except Republic Dominicanthe rest of the countries have a rather significant lag”.

Republic Dominican is, according to the director of the Ceniain the group of countries that are called adopters. “They have a certain degree of maturity compared to other countries in the region. It probably has to do with the fact that there is an ecosystem for training people and researchers; it has evolved faster than other comparable countries by GDP,” he certifies.

Chilean leadership in AI

Durán’s work in the Cenia It is the coordination of the different activities in research, development and transfer of the AI.

This center works as a laboratory intelligence artificialoperating throughout the region, seeking to bring solutions to the industry in Latin America and the Caribbean.

It is located in Chilia country that is currently a leader in the development of AI in the region, according to the Latin American Index of Artificial intelligence (ILIA) 2024.

Durán justifies that this is due, mainly, “to a series of public policies that did not point towards intelligence artificialbut rather they were the result of decisions of another nature.

“Particularly (Chili) has very good connectivity, it has download speed, access and high-speed internet access rates that are better than European ones,” he says.
