The general director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Hector Porcellaannounced that the institution will accompany with the appropriate technological and regulatory assistance the initiative to create the first country’s air health corridorwith the mission of improving care for medical emergencies and helping to save lives.
“IDAC is more than willing to coordinate and work with all institutions in the health and civil protection system to help operationalize the Technology that Saves Lives project sponsored by journalist Lorenny Solano through the Laso Foundation and its network of blood donors,” he said.
The purpose of the air sanitary corridor, through a special drone donated by the Chinese Embassy, is to facilitate the distribution of blood for emergency situations, avoiding the delays that occur when the transfer is done using conventional vehicles in the congested streets and avenues of Greater Santo Domingo.
According to Porcella, the project has the support of the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, who from the outset showed his willingness to facilitate its implementation, positioning the country as a pioneer in Latin America in the use of unmanned aircraft to assist in medical emergency needs.
However, he pointed out that regardless of the lofty objectives of the air health corridor, the Idac is ensuring that it complies with the regulations on air navigation and operational safety.
He explained that the Flight Standards, Air Navigation and Operational Surveillance personnel are being systematically trained by qualified instructors from both the European Aviation Safety Agency and ICAO advisors in the specialized training required for this type of technology.
The statements of the director were made during the presentation of the drone or unmanned aircraft donated by the embassy of the People’s Republic of China after making a demonstration tour in just a few minutes from the National Police Hospital to Plaza España, where he was received by a delegation headed by Porcella, the ambassador Chen Luning and the doctor Happy Edisondirector of the Metropolitan Regional Health Service.
