IATA urges the new government of Mexico to invest in the AICM

Within the framework of the previous work of the 80th Annual General Assembly (AGM) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Peter Cerda, vice president for the Americas of the association, highlighted that the new government of president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum must concentrate on making important investments in the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and returning its capacity of 61 operations per hour, since this continues to be the primary airport, but requires very important investments in infrastructure.

According to Excelsior, the manager expressed that communication – which was lacking in this government – is the basis for the proper development of aviation in the country and the development of the Metropolitan Airport System (SMA).

The manager pointed out that with the new government they want to plan and know what the SMA strategy is going to be for Mexico City, and with this know how the resources are going to be implemented to ensure that there is the infrastructure required for the growth of aviation in Mexico in the next 15 years.

He expressed that what they will seek is to work more openly with the new government, on airport, regulatory and sustainability issues, which marks a very important agenda. “Dialogue is critical and important, and it is something that we suffer a lot from with the current government,” said Cerda. She highlighted that the capacity of 61 operations at the AICM must return as soon as possible, since this decrease limits the growth of air traffic.

By 2030, IATA forecasts a movement of 140 million passengers in Mexico, compared to the 108 million registered in 2023. “The AICM will continue to play a very important role in the coming years,” he reiterated.
