On the 30th anniversary of the trial for the racist murder of the Dominican woman Lucrecia Pérez in Spain, the Disney+ platform will premiere the documentary series ‘Lucrecia, a hate crime’ worldwide on June 27.
It narrates in four chapters the circumstances and social impact of what was considered the first racist crime committed in Spain.
It has Justin Webster as scriptwriter and executive producer, along with Sumpta Ayuso, and is directed by David Cabrera and Garbiñe Armentia.
The docuseries focuses on the murder of this Dominican woman, committed by a group of neo-Nazis in an abandoned nightclub in Madrid in 1992 and the investigation; includes unpublished archival material and testimonies from those who experienced it first-hand, Disney+ indicates in a statement.
The case shocked Spanish society and helped push for new laws against racism. After the image of a modern and democratic country that Spain projected to the world with the Barcelona Olympic Games and the 1992 Universal Exhibition in Seville, extremist groups, racism and violence grew.
According to David Cabrera, Lucrecia’s story is “a journey to the roots of hate, a manual of how hate spreads in society.”
The series features testimonies from the victim’s family and friends, including his daughter Kenya. Also participating are police officers and judges who investigated the case, journalists, direct witnesses of what happened, as well as lawyers for the accused and the prosecution.
Due to its racist connotations, the case caused great shock and rejection in Spanish society, and the four people involved were sentenced to sentences totaling 126 years in prison.
