Despegar has announced the sudden death of Mario Eduardo Vásquez, a member of the board of directors since 2014 and chairman of Despegar’s audit committee, apparently from natural causes, the company said.

Likewise, Damian Scokin, CEO of Despegar, regretted the loss of the company executive and recognized the vital contributions he made, such as in the firm’s initial public offering in 2017. “Mario’s dedication, professionalism and warmth will be deeply missed,” Scokin said.

Vásquez worked as CEO of the Telefónica Group in Argentina and was part of Arthur Andersen for 33 years.

Following the death of Mario Eduardo Vásquez, he will be replaced in the company’s positions by Nilesh Lakhani, who was a member of the audit committee, and Michael James Doyle as chairman of the committee.

As reported by REPORTUR.us, Despegar presented its financial results for the first quarter of 2024, where it reported a period of sustained growth. Gross bookings amounted to $1.3 billion, 12% more than the same period of the previous year, driven by solid commercial execution and a strong demand environment in its key markets: Brazil and Mexico. (Despegar: recorded revenues of USD 174 M in the first quarter of the year).
