The Cuban government has decided to resume accepting cash payments in tourism and shops, a measure it had cancelled in 2021. According to Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, Cuba is losing money.

“We are losing a lot of money. We are not going to eliminate banking, but tourists cannot come and not book a deal because the cards do not work. This measure will not only apply to tourism, but also to shops and other sectors,” Marrero said.

The measure was announced during the third ordinary session of the National Assembly, in the tenth legislature, where Marrero announced the regulations that affect micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and the private sector in general, as reported by Cibercuba.

Marrero also said that this is part of the country’s “Macroeconomic Stabilization Program” and with which they also intend to control the “partial dollarization of the economy.”

As reported by REPORTUR.mxrecently the Cuban government of Miguel Díaz-Canel declared itself in a “war economy” due to the crisis that the island is going through and that has surpassed the so-called Special Period of the nineties, for which it was looking for a new package of measures that aim to promote the “stability of the macroeconomy”, with budget cuts, single prices and pausing investments that are not “essential”, among others. The measure, they announced at the time, could have a great impact on tourism, which is in a serious crisis due to the lack of visitors. (Blow to tourism: Cuba declares itself in a war economy).
