The Benito Juárez city council has exceeded the collection expectations of the Environmental Sanitation Law, reaching 332.9 million pesos in the first five months of the year, that is, 58.9 million more than projected. This fee is paid by tourists who stay in the 250 hotels in the destination, at a cost of 76 pesos per night. The annual goal is 724 million pesos.

The municipal treasurer, Yuri Salazar, indicated that the funds raised will be allocated to three key areas: 1) beach maintenance and cleaning, 2) public safety and civil protection, and 3) public works. The resources will allow us to face the sargassum season, renew and expand avenues, and improve the equipment of organizations such as civil protection and firefighters.

The Hotel sector has expressed its satisfaction with the transparency in the management of these funds, highlighting that Hotel occupancies are above expectations. Until now, no non-compliance has been reported by hotels in paying this right.

This collection reflects Cancún’s commitment to maintaining its natural resources and the safety of its visitors, guaranteeing a sustainable and safe tourist destination.

As reported REPORTUR.mxIn January, Cancun hoteliers will ask the municipal government that the Sanitation Tax paid by tourists be used for security and beach maintenance. (Cancun hoteliers ask to use sanitation tax on beaches).

“We must continue to strengthen the issue of safety in the sandy areas, which is why we are promoting actions with the resources paid by tourists and that we as hoteliers are reporting to the municipality. While the second proposal is focused on organization, image and thus attracting more visitors,” said Jesús Almaguer, president of the Hotel Association of Cancún, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres.
