The government of Quintana Roo determined that during the elections this Sunday, June 2, restaurants located in the tourist areas of the entity will be able to sell alcoholic beverages.

According to the notice recently issued by the Ministry of Finance and Planning (Sefiplan), the so-called Prohibition Law will begin to apply from the first minute of Saturday, June 1, and will be lifted on Monday, June 3, once election day has concluded. “Businesses located in tourist areas with alcoholic beverage licenses in restaurants and restaurant-bar establishments are excepted from this prohibition,” the agreement reads.

Therefore, in the rest of the city, starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, when the so-called breweries and other establishments such as groceries and supermarkets that sell alcoholic beverages usually open, their sale will be prohibited. In the event that said provision is disregarded, the establishments that have incurred the measure will have to be closed by the competent authority and various financial fines will be imposed on them.

The measure is applauded by hotels and restaurants in the Hotel zone, but not for those who work in bars and restaurants in the city center, since for them it means a hard blow to their pockets, especially in the case of waiters in the city. city, who lose up to 25% of their usual tips.

“Tips are always lost around these dates, the good thing is that this is not every year; But I don’t see it right that people go to the Hotel zone of Cancun to drink and here in the center of the city it is not possible; It is riskier for them to drive from there because it leads to an increase in car accidents, I don’t see the point,” commented a waiter who works in the center of Cancun.
