The Cancun airport has shown a decrease in the number of passengers transported on seven routes of the 10 main ones operated by the terminal, possibly due to the opening of the new Tulum airport, Viva Aerobus and Volaris for leaving the Airbus 320 and 321neo on the ground to engine review.
Among these routes is the Mexico City-Cancún route with a drop of 25.1% in the first four months of the year, as it went from 1.3 million passengers in 2023 to 1.1 million in 2024. Likewise, the Guadalajara-Cancún route decreased 19.3% , mobilizing 271,096 passengers, compared to 323,417 in 2023 in the same quarter, according to El Economista.
The Monterrey-Cancún route fell 16.3%, going from 418,405 passengers in 2023 to 360,694 in 2024. The Tijuana-Cancún route fell 12.4%; Toluca-Cancún 9.1%, Puebla-Cancún also decreased 9% so far this year.
With this, the national routes to Cancún have dropped a total of 217,000 passengers in the first four months of the year, according to data from the Center for Advanced Research in Sustainable Tourism of the Anáhuac University.
As reported REPORTUR.mx, Mexicana de Aviación plans to convert the Tulum airport into a second hub for international Flights, as revealed by José Gerardo Vega Rivera, general director of the Olmeca-Maya-Mexica Airport, Railway, Auxiliary and Related Services Group (Gafsacomm). (Tulum Airport will be an international hub for Mexicana).
