Cancun: alarm over drop in arrival of American tourists

The number of international travelers arriving at Cancun airport plummeted by 13.8% in July compared to the same month in 2023, especially among Americans, although Tulum airport has gained strength and reached more than 210 thousand international passengers in the first half of the year.

Hoteliers attribute this decline to various reasons, including “a fatigue among Americans with coming to Mexico after having done so for several years,” says Carlos Velázquez in his column for Dinero en Imagen.

Another reason why tourists from the North American country are stopping visiting are the new Caribbean destinations that are becoming more popular, such as those in the Dominican Republic, but also those in Europe.

Likewise, there is the issue of security in Quintana Roo destinations, since the murder of the 12-year-old boy in Cancun was heavily covered in the USA. However, data from Starc, which is run by Francisco Madrid in Cancun, indicate that other destinations such as Los Cabos had a drop of 8% and in Vallarta, 8.7%.

The report from the Center for Advanced Research on Sustainable Tourism (STARC), of Anáhuac Cancún, indicates that from Ecuador, due to the breaking of diplomatic relations between the countries, there are already 50 thousand people who have stopped traveling even though they can enter Mexico with a Schengen or American visa. From Peru, there are 10 thousand who have not traveled to these destinations due to the visa requirement for two months.
