The Mexican Association of Inbound Tourism Agencies (Amatur) has expressed its fear that the image of the destination among tourists will be damaged due to roadblocks by transporters against Uber.
Amatur asks transport companies to avoid continuing with the blockades, as they are affecting the main roads and considers that tourists are free to choose the transport that is regulated and has the necessary permits to Travel.
“A few days ago, a possible blockade by transporters was announced, on August 31, against the platform company Uber, for its operation at the airport; however, we are against them,” said the president of Amatur, Sergio González Rubiera, as reported by Sipse.
González clarified that the transporters who are in Amatur are pre-contracted by the tourists who arrive, so other services do not affect them. “We only take tourists who, from the moment they decide to visit the destinations, acquire a pre-contracted transport service and therefore we do not see a major impact on competition, but there are effects on the destinations due to the blockades,” he commented.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxapparently, the protection that Uber platform drivers claim to have to operate at the Cancun airport is only state-owned, which would not allow them to offer transportation at the air terminal because it is a federal zone, as stated at the time by José Bizarro Galván, president of the Movement of United Organized Transporters of the Riviera (TOUR). (Cancun: doubts about Uber being able to operate at the airport).
“This is totally false, since we have asked the authorities to inform us about it and because of this they have indicated to us that there is no protection whatsoever for said platform to operate at the Cancun International Airport or other states of the country,” said Bizarro Galván.
