This Thursday, Cancún suffered a power outage that left 70% of the restaurants affiliated with the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac) with economic losses, as they were unable to offer service, and reported damage to refrigeration equipment.

Less than 1% of the restaurants in the destination have a power plant, so most closed early. “It did affect us, since without electricity we cannot offer the service,” said José Julio Villarreal Zapata, president of Canirac in Cancún and Quintana Roo, adding that the damages are between USD 530 and USD 2,600, depending on the type of restaurant.

“The industry is affected by this blackout, and there are economic losses due to not being able to sell, and there are also material damages that are being counted, and some reach up to 50 thousand pesos (USD 2,600), depending on the size of the business,” Villarreal said, according to Sipse.

However, the Federal Electricity Commission explained that the failures occurred due to damage to a high voltage line caused by atmospheric discharges in Quintana Roo, which affected the energy supply for two hours.

“We hope that the CFE will take action on this matter to reduce the effects of the blackouts, and since this is a tourist destination, the losses are greater,” said Villarreal.

As reported by REPORTUR.mxdue to the endless blackouts in June, small hotels in downtown Tulum suffered the early departure of guests, who cannot stand the power outages. Santiago Puc, receptionist at the Ada Hotel, explained to La Jornada Maya that the lodging centers, mainly the small ones with less than 20 rooms, are the ones that have suffered the most from this situation because they have seen the rooms vacated in the recent days of blackouts. He said at the time that travelers come to Tulum to experience a stay with all the ideal and basic conditions, but the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) does not offer quality service, which affects what hotels offer to customers. In addition to this, he explained that there have been economic effects due to the departure of tourists and also a decrease in food, which has spoiled due to the lack of refrigeration.
