The president of the United States, Joe Biden, and the former president and Republican candidate for the White House, Donald Trump, will debate on June 27 in a face-to-face meeting organized by CNN in Atlanta.
This is the first of the two debates that the two candidates have agreed to hold before the presidential elections on November 5. The second, still undated, will be in September.
The debate will take place at 9:00 p.m. local time (01:00 GMT on June 28) at the CNN studios in the city of Atlanta, in the crucial state of Georgia.
“I have received and accepted an invitation from CNN to debate on June 27. It’s up to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere and at any time,” the president announced in a message on his X account.
CNN assured that the Trump campaign also accepted the invitation.
There will be a second debate
The second televised face-to-face debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump will be next September 10 on the country’s ABC television network.
“I have also received and accepted an invitation to a debate hosted by ABC on Tuesday, September 10,” Biden said on the social network X. ABC News, for its part, confirmed that the Trump campaign had also accepted the invitation.
The face to face of Biden and Trump will continue a tradition
The acceptance of the debate by the two campaigns occurred shortly after Biden proposed two face-to-face debates to Trump on Wednesday morning in June and September.
The former president, who has been urging Biden to debate with him for weeks, quickly accepted the proposal.
This format breaks with the tradition that has existed since 1960 of holding face-to-face debates a few weeks before the elections, normally at the end of September and October.
Trump had insisted on holding an early debate, before the states that allow early voting many weeks before the elections began to vote.
