Asur suffers a drop in passenger numbers in Mexico but an increase in Colombia

Asur, which manages Cancun Airport, among others, announced that passenger air traffic for July 2024 totaled 6.4 million passengers, representing a 1.7% decrease compared to July 2023. In a statement, the airport company noted that passenger traffic showed year-on-year increases of 15.4% in Colombia, 10.5% in Puerto Rico, while in Mexico it had a decrease of 11.1%.

Passenger traffic growth in Colombia was driven by a 26.9% increase in international traffic and a 12.3% increase in domestic traffic. Puerto Rico reported growth in domestic and international traffic, 9.5% and 17.4%, respectively. However, passenger traffic in Mexico saw a decrease in domestic and international traffic of 9.4% and 12.7%, respectively.

All figures in the release reflect comparisons between the period of July 1-31, 2024, and July 1-31, 2023. Transit and general aviation passengers are excluded for Mexico and Colombia only.

It should be noted that Asur is an international airport operator with a portfolio of concessions to operate, maintain and develop 16 airports in the Americas. It operates nine airports in southeastern Mexico, including Cancun Airport, the most important tourist destination in Mexico, and six airports in northern Colombia, including Medellin International Airport (Rio Negro), the second busiest in Colombia. Asur is also a 60% shareholder of Aerostar Airport Holdings LLC, operator of Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

As reported by REPORTUR.mxthe federal secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, reported that during 2024 there are 73 million 796 thousand 573 scheduled seats registered in national operations to the different destinations in the country. (Cancún and AICM lead the ranking of scheduled Flights in 2024).
