Of the airports operated by the three existing private airport groups in the country, those of ASUR are the most exposed to the effects of hurricanes and cyclones. According to an analysis prepared by Grupo Financiero Monex, entitled “Airport sector: hurricane season”, ASUR has greater exposure to these meteorological phenomena. The analysis indicates that a hurricane could directly affect production, commerce and services.

“Particularly, with regard to the airport sector, we consider that the region in which ASUR is located is the most vulnerable to this type of natural disasters, however, we highlight that historically the Pacific region has managed to mitigate the economic impact,” says the report. He added that, to a lesser extent, the Pacific and North Central airport groups (GAP and OMA, in that order) are exposed.

The analysis indicates that recently the United States National Hurricane Center began the hurricane season in the Pacific Ocean, which runs from May 15 to November 30, while in the Atlantic Ocean the season begins on June 1 and will end on November 30.

According to information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in the Atlantic there is an 85.0% probability of a more active season than normal. For its part, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) expects 20 to 23 tropical cyclones in the Atlantic, of which 4 or 5 are major hurricanes, while little hurricane activity is expected in the Pacific.

For the Pacific region, NOAA has forecast between one and 4 tropical cyclones for the hurricane season, which is below the historical average of 4 or 5. This expectation includes tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes.

As reported REPORTUR.mx, with just a few weeks left until the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, the Riviera Maya Hotel Association (AHRM) decided to activate its internal civil protection committee to update the security protocols that guarantee the protection of tourists, collaborators and facilities.
