Real estate fraud in Cancun continues to be a matter of concern, because it is affecting the image of the destination. In this regard, Patricia Mora, president of the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals (AMPI) in this city, regrets that it is becoming widespread because most of the development companies are doing things right.
“We must applaud those who do things correctly. We have very good developments that are doing things well. However, because of others who are doing things incorrectly, who do not comply, the whole sector is then generalized under the title of real estate fraud,” said Mora.
He stressed that there are real estate companies in Cancun with a long history and experience that have been affected by these accusations. The good news, he said, is that the authorities are taking measures in this regard, with project closures, and he called on buyers to always look for formal companies and certified professionals.
He recalled that there is a registry of real estate professionals available on the Internet, where interested parties can check; there is also the AMPI, which they can go to and ask if a certain property is in order, request legal files, etc., as well as there are many other filters so that before purchasing an apartment or any other type of project, one can be certain of the investment they want to make.
He added that the most recent cases of real estate fraud reported have occurred in Tulum, which is due in part to the enormous growth of the sector in this city and the attention that the destination has received worldwide. But he recalled that other areas of high interest such as Cancun and the Riviera Maya have also suffered from the phenomenon of real estate fraud, and what is sought is precisely to protect the investor.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxin June, real estate fraud, mainly in tourist destinations, was growing significantly, as criminal groups falsify documents to sell properties, or build properties in areas classified as ecological rescue, experts warned at the time.
