Santo Domingo.- The Dominican president, Luis Abinader, announced this Monday that in the coming days he will travel to Europe, where he will hold meetings with the presidents of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, and of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousaand will also be received in Vatican City by the Pope Francisco.
In his usual weekly press conference, Abinader gave details about the trip that will take him to Italy on May 24, where he will meet Matarella, and the day 27 He will be received by Pope Francis and will hold a bilateral meeting with Vatican authorities.
Abinader, who on Sunday was re-elected with a large victory in the first round by achieving more than 57% of the votes according to the Central Electoral Board (JCE), and will govern the Dominican Republic for the next four years, explained that the visit was planned before the elections were held.
After his time in Italy, Abinader will travel to Portugal, where he will meet with Rebelo de Sousa, with whom “we have developed a good friendship” and with whom there are joint projects in tourism, specifically in the real estate and retirement areas.
Likewise, at the meeting they will address issues in which «Portugal has made a lot of progress» such as Artificial Intelligence and Information Technologies, he noted.
Again, Abinader thanked the Dominican people “the level of civility demonstrated” on Sunday’s election day, as well as his main rivals in the race for the Presidency, the former head of state Leonel Fernández and the former president of the Chamber of Deputies Abel MartÃnez, for their democratic spirit.
He also conveyed his gratitude to the more than 20 heads of state and of government who have sent their congratulations to him, as well as to the leaders of various international organizations who have expressed themselves in the same sense.
