Federal Tourism Secretary Miguel Torruco presented a summary of the results achieved during his administration, which is about to end, highlighting that AMLO’s government prioritized the collection of foreign currency and per capita spending over the arrival of international tourists, always seeking the well-being of vulnerable sectors, in order to reduce the contrasts between tourist paradises and hells of marginalization.
He pointed out that in 2019, major infrastructure works began in Mexico, as well as the creation and development of innovative tourism products to satisfy a more informed and demanding tourist; as well as an intense promotional effort, with “precision shots” towards the main tourist-issuing countries.
He highlighted large-scale projects, such as the Mayan Train, which benefits Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas, with 1,554 kilometers, 34 stations and 117 high-impact tourist experiences.
Also, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Interoceanic Train, 316 kilometers long, forms a strategic bridge between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, detonating the southern region of Mexico, especially Oaxaca and Veracruz, in the social, commercial, industrial and tourist areas.
Torruco said that during the current administration, ports, airports and highways were built, expanded and remodeled, and the creation of “anchor” products was promoted, with the aim of diversifying tourism activity in the 270 tourist destinations in Mexico.
The “Magical Neighborhoods of Mexico” program was created; the “Magical Towns Market” was launched, both nationally and internationally, the first with five editions, and one more to be held in September; and the second, with three major events, in Barcelona, Spain; Los Angeles, California, and San Antonio, Texas, in the United States.
The Secretary of Tourism indicated that during this administration the country has been promoted by visiting 39 cities in 18 nations, where conferences and the seminar Así es México have been given to 4,680 tour operators interested in the destination. The Mexican Pavilion has also been present at 39 tourism fairs in 11 countries.
“At Fitur 2025, Mexico will be, for the first time in the history of this great fair, the guest partner country, thanks to the strong, solid, active and visionary Union of Secretaries of Tourism of Mexico (Asetur) led by Juan Enrique Suárez del Real Tostado, with which synergy has been created and teamwork has been done,” said Torruco, as he has been reporting.
