Last Friday at noon, a French tourist was the victim of a robbery in the city of Chetumal. Francoise Josiane Luent, 62, parked her rented vehicle on Avenida Héroes, in the center of the capital, while visiting the Museum of Mayan Culture.

Upon returning, approximately 30 minutes later, she discovered that the trunk of the car had been broken into; the criminals forced the lock and took three suitcases. According to the tourist’s statements, inside the suitcases there were clothes, handicrafts and diabetes medicines, as well as a considerable sum of money: 45 thousand Mexican pesos and 1,500 euros, equivalent to almost 31 thousand Mexican pesos, which adds up to a total of 76 thousand pesos in cash, or about 4 thousand dollars.

Police officers who were carrying out surveillance patrols in the area went to the scene after being alerted by the woman. They later transferred her to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), where she filed the corresponding complaint. The authorities stated that they “continue working on the investigation to clarify the facts and recover the belongings of the French tourist.”

In response to this incident, local authorities have issued a series of recommendations for tourists visiting the municipality of Othón P. Blanco and the capital Chetumal, such as: not leaving valuables in the vehicle, parking in safe places, being aware of their surroundings, staying alert and reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.

As reported by REPORTUR.mxthe tourism secretary of Quintana Roo, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, recently admitted that work must be done on the security of destinations to generate a perception of security in the tourist markets, as they continue with alert number two from the United States that warns its citizens of the dangers in the Mexican Caribbean. (QRoo: US Travel alert is limited to outside of tourist areas).
