Santo Domingo Este. – The Santo Domingo Este Fire Department, together with other relief agencies, rescued a woman only identified as Carla, who allegedly slipped and fell into the waters of the Caribbean Sea while walking on the shore, near kilometer 10 and a half of the Las Américas highway.
According to what the woman from Santiago told the divers who rescued her, she was in the capital doing some paperwork regarding some personal documents, and when she fell into the sea she was taking some photos and then heading to the house of a friend who lives near the scene of the incident.
Colonel Roberto Santos Méndez, head of the Santo Domingo Este Fire Department, said that he learned of the incident through a 911 call and that several brigades immediately went to the scene. “Through 9-1-1 we received a call in which they informed us that there was a person in the waters of the Caribbean Sea, specifically at kilometer 10 and a half, and we immediately dispatched a rescue brigade that was stationed in the Los Tres Ojos neighborhood, and in four minutes they arrived at the scene and entered the water and kept the woman alive.”
At the time of the rescue, a Dominican Navy vessel arrived at the scene to remove the lady, who was then examined by the doctors of the National Emergency System 9-1-1 who were present and subsequently transferred to a health center.
In addition to the Santo Domingo Este Fire Department, brigades from the National Police, the Dominican Navy, the Municipal Police led by Colonel Juan Ramón Aquino Rodríguez and brigades from the Ministry of Public Works arrived at the scene.
The incident occurred near kilometer 10 and a half of the Las Américas highway, in front of the Los Frailes sector, where dozens of people arrived to observe the rescue work carried out by the divers.
Colonel Roberto Santos Méndez said that in his experience of more than 30 years he has seen a decrease in the occurrence of suicide attempts by jumping into the waters of the Caribbean Sea.
