Due to changes in maritime currents, Isla Mujeres has presented an atypical sargassum outbreak in Playa Norte, so the local government had crews of workers from the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) and volunteers from the Isla Mujeres City Council to clean the the macroalgae.

Dayana Alejandra Pérez Medina, director of Zofemat, indicated that it is an area of ​​at least 150 linear meters of beach. Likewise, she commented that since Wednesday morning, a crew of more than 70 people worked on the beach.

“From very early on, teams of Zofemat workers, fishermen and volunteers from other departments of the municipality have been deployed in the area to carry out cleaning and removal of sargassum; However, everything will depend on the weather conditions to be able to finish quickly,” he explained, as reported by Noticaribe.

As reported REPORTUR.mxAt the beginning of June, the monitoring of the Secretariat of the Navy of Mexico reported that in the following days they expect greater sargassum stains in Quintana Roo, where the level went from low to moderate (level 4), this due to the southeast winds that affect tourist destinations. “The alert level for the Mexican Caribbean region is in the ‘moderate’ category (CAT-4), with an algal coverage of approximately 12,680 tons,” according to the institute’s report.
