The party’s presidential candidate Power of the People and allied organizations, Leonel Fernandezpresented before the Hotel and Tourism Association (Asonahores), his government proposals for the important business sector that generates foreign currency.
He presented his considerations, which are contained in the People’s Force government program, ahead of the elections on May 19, regarding the tourism sector.
The opposition political leader said that the tourism sector is very vulnerable to exogenous factors, including oil prices, what may occur in USAas the main supplier of Dominican tourism.
He maintained that for this, “in the country we are not prepared.”
Likewise, he raised the need to eliminate open-air dumps in the vicinity of tourist facilities, and throughout the country, since they carry a negative image to the tourists who visit us.
The presidential candidate of a coalition of political parties proposed, as part of his proposals, to further promote tourism by facilitating and expediting the granting of the corresponding permits and applying land use regulations quickly.
Fernández also proposed uniting the public and private sectors in a national marketing strategy for the tourism sector.
He suggested to businessmen in the tourism sector the development of a strategy that promotes the consumption of local products, “for the benefit of our producers.”
The political leader, with ample possibilities of once again directing the country’s destinies, proposed the creation of a public-private crisis management committee to act in defense of the country’s reputation in the face of attempts at international discredit, in the face of eventualities that may arise, such as the cases of traffic accidents that occurred on the Eastern Highway, resulting in human loss, affecting tourists who visit us.
He specified that, in the event of a possible tax reform, the tourism sector would not be affected, because it would propose extending the tax incentives established in Law 158-01.
In addition, he said that it would stimulate air connectivity, increasing Flight routes and frequencies, which represents attracting visitors from other places.
Other aspects that are contained in the government program of the Fuerza del Pueblo party, to encourage the visit of tourists, is to improve and expand the infrastructure of the existing airports in the country and build modern airports.
The opposition candidate said that, as part of the government that he could lead based on the electoral results, he would implement a comprehensive tourist security policy, creating a 24/7 Politut service center, greater professionalization and expansion of the Tourist Police, with greater transportation and bilingual agents.
The presidential candidate promised to promote the use of electric vehicles in the tourist area as part of a policy for the decarbonization of energy.
