Yomaris Macdonaldacting consul general of the United States in the Dominican Republic, indicated that the DR is a very safe tourist destination and that is why visitors from the US to the Caribbean country are growing in recent years.
He said that the country is a great partner for the United States and in that sense they are working together to improve security in tourist areas.
He stated that last year they carried out a series of training sessions in Punta Cana, Santiago, Las Terrenas and other areas, together with the Tourist Police (Politur) and the prosecutor’s office, with a view to working together to protect US citizens arriving in the Dominican Republic.
In addition, he recalled that in February an agreement was signed with the United States Consulate in the country, Politur and the Hotel and Tourism Association of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores) to further strengthen relationships and create a protocol for handling potential events involving US citizens, as well as the timely exchange of information between different parties regarding US tourists in the country.
He explained that the aforementioned is very important, because Americans are leaving their hotels more every day and exploring the country on their own, according to Hoy.
He cited that problems such as medical emergencies, minor thefts or scams can occur, this is one of the most common, especially through dating applications.
Macdonald said that in Puerto Plata and Punta Cana have offices to help Americans (No consular services, only emergency assistance).
It is remembered that the United States is the first country that sends tourists to the Dominican Republic, with more than four million tourists each year.
In 2023, of the total non-resident tourists who arrived in the country, Americans represented 47%, for a growth of 22%. In March 2024 alone, the United States contributed 49 percent of tourists.
