Between 2 and 3 drivers are arrested almost daily by National Guard police for providing the Uber taxi service in the vicinity of the Mérida International Airport. And, knowing that they are not allowed to provide taxi service, the platform drivers go to the air terminal in search of clients. The authorities impose a fine of 6 thousand pesos and the vehicle is detained, which is sent to the security yards, for which they must pay a fine of almost 25 thousand additional pesos.

Given this situation, the drivers of the Uber platform have asked the authorities to regularize this urban transportation service at the Mérida airport and to allow them to work in this air terminal.

“We know that there are people and even individuals who come to provide transportation service in front of the airport entrance and no one says anything to them, but since they already identify us, when they surprise us they impose fines of up to 45 thousand pesos” , complained an Uber driver.

«We are only looking for ways to earn a little money to support our families, but with the argument that we are not regularized, they force us to leave our cars parked in streets surrounding the air terminal and go look for clients in the hallway. from the airport,” he added.

He pointed out that competing drivers charge higher rates, compared to those who have been providing the service for years, all because the authorities refuse to recognize Uber as they have done in Cancun, and prefer to leave things as they are.

As reported REPORTUR.mx, amid the cry “they are killing us,” Uber platform drivers demonstrated in March, at the doors of the Azuna building, in the center of Cancún, where the company’s offices are located, to demand greater security. (Cancún: Uber drivers demand security after a driver dies).
