Tourists visiting Bacalar have begun using Tulum International Airport to mitigate the effects of the bottleneck caused by heavy vehicular traffic entering and leaving the state capital, Chetumal, said Hiram Gomez, director of Tourism for the municipality of Bacalar.
For a couple of months now, the construction work on the Mayan Train has caused a lot of inconvenience to citizens, business owners and tourists due to the long lines they have to wait in to cross from one side to the other, and this has even caused some visitors to miss their plane tickets or a connection.
Gómez explained that the impacts caused by both the rains and the construction of the Mayan Train, rather than cancellations, are causing delays in the transfer of tourists, and although the Chetumal airport is the gateway for tourism in Bacalar, the new Tulum airport has helped them solve this situation.
“It is a constant struggle. Now we are facing the great challenge of finishing the works on the Mayan Train and also the issue of the rains that affect us in some way. The promotional campaigns and the actions that are being carried out in cultural and artistic matters help us to reinforce our image,” he said.
Gomez added that so far this summer vacation season there is an estimated occupancy rate of close to 80 percent, which are quite good numbers, thanks to the alternatives offered to tourists so they can get to know Bacalar and have the best Travel experience.
