The environment and climate change commission of the current Quintana Roo legislature is analyzing a bill to apply more rigorous sanctions to real estate and Hotel developers who pollute the environment. The proposal was presented by deputy Andrea González.
In this regard, legislator Ricardo Velazco pointed out that this approach aims to classify several crimes in order to inhibit environmental deterioration. “Much more severe penalties will be applied to anyone who does so; At the moment it is being studied, analyzed and discussed by the commission to then prepare a ruling,” he explained.
Velazco commented that tourism growth in the state of Quintana Roo has brought with it a large number of ecological damages. Given this, it is intended that the projects to be developed have feasibility studies and treatment of sewage or substances considered dangerous that threaten the groundwater table or maritime waters. Likewise, they must have the infrastructure to provide drinking water, clean energy, sewage and garbage, as well as have all municipal, state and federal permits.
“If everything goes well, in the second half of May (the bill) should be passed to the plenary session. The aim is to ensure that businessmen do not leave due to bad practices and that there is orderly, efficient and competitive planning,” said Velazco.
The initiative proposes penalties of 1 to 9 years in prison, and 300 to 3 thousand days’ salary as a fine for anyone who generates discharges of sewage or substances considered dangerous to the groundwater or maritime waters, in a context in which, as revealed REPORTUR.mxenvironmentalists ask President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) to stop ‘ecocides’ (Cancún: they block the Hotel zone and ask AMLO to stop ‘ecocides’).
