The decrease in the arrival of tourists to destinations in Quintana Roo during this summer, especially to Chetumal, Bacalar and Mahahual, is attributed to the works on the Mayan Train. The Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur) admits that there is an impact on the results expected for the summer.

According to Hotel occupancy data, the occupancy rate in these three destinations is 60%, while in other places it would be between 40% and 45% depending on the characteristics of the Hotel facilities. The Secretary of Tourism, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, said that solving the problem is not in the hands of the department.

He indicated that the long lines to enter and leave Chetumal are due to the traffic jams where the Mayan Train bridges are being built “they affect but we have to wait for the work to be completed because there will surely be great benefits for the southern zone since it will also be possible to unite Chetumal with the airport services of the state capital, Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Cancun and there will be greater infrastructure that will allow better mobility but we have to wait for the work to be completed,” said Cueto Restra, as reported by Noticaribe.

However, Cueto Riestra said that the process has been carried out with meetings between the economic sectors of the state capital and the corresponding federal authorities to find a solution. “But if good results have not been achieved, it is an issue outside our department,” he lamented.

As reported by REPORTUR.mxtourists visiting Bacalar have begun using Tulum International Airport to mitigate the effects of the bottleneck generated by heavy vehicular traffic entering and leaving the state capital, Chetumal, said Hiram Gomez, director of Tourism for the municipality of Bacalar. (Tulum Airport: Bacalar tourists prefer it due to construction of the Mayan Train).
