The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has authorized the placement of artificial barriers known locally as “whales” in front of the Hyatt Hotel in Playa del Carmen.
The head of Semarnat in the municipality of Solidaridad, Lourdes Várguez, explained that these structures do not necessarily have permission from the Solidaridad City Council, since they are located in a federal zone, and Semarnat was the agency that granted the permits.
He added that municipal authorities can only observe whether these barriers – which are intended to collect sand – will work without harming neighboring beaches. If damage is caused, the structures must be removed.
The barriers have a useful life of five years and their purpose is the recovery of the sandbanks in front of the Hyatt Hotel in this destination, being the first of their type to be placed in the coastal area of Solidaridad.
The official admitted that the beaches face serious erosion, attributed both to the natural process and to the strong waves; However, she hopes that new barriers can mitigate some of these effects.
The placement of artificial barriers by Semarnat is one of the strategies implemented to address the environmental challenges that affect the coast. The situation will be closely monitored by local authorities to ensure that the beaches do not suffer negative consequences and that the barriers meet their sand recovery objective.
