The complaints for seduction of minors of age, classified as crimes sexualhave experienced a notable increase in the Dominican Republic during 2024, according to a statistical report from the Attorney’s Office General of the Republic.
The report, which covers the period from January to September, records a total of 3,342 complaints for this crimecompared to the 1,379 reported in 2023, accumulating 4,721 complaints in the last 18 months.
The seduction of minors is positioned as one of the crimes sexual most prevalent in the country, being surpassed only by aggression sexualwhich accumulated 3,384 complaints in 2024 compared to 1,721 in 2023, and the violation sexualwith 2,190 cases this year compared to 954 last year.
The months of March and April 2024 were especially critical, with 197 incidents reported in each one. In 2023, the months of January, March and May stood out with figures of 186, 172 and 171 cases, respectively.
Factors triggers
Ligia Jeannette Pérez Peña, executive president of the National Council for Children and Adolescents (Conani), attributed these alarming figures to deeply ingrained social norms and cultural patterns that encourage the “normalization” of relations between girls and adolescents with adults, as well as abuse sexualpregnancies in minors and early unions.
“The cases of seduction what is they denounce They urge us to continue joining efforts to reach all citizens and continue insisting on the education of adults, so that they know that children and adolescents do not touch each other and that, if they do, they must bear the full weight of the law,” Pérez Peña highlighted in statements to Diario Libre.
