The Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, admits that work must be done on the security of destinations to generate a perception of security in the tourist markets, as they continue with alert number two from the United States that warns its citizens of the dangers in the Mexican Caribbean.
Cueto Riestra said that action must be taken in this regard “and not say one death today and another death another day. I would say that there are facts that should concern the whole society and that need to be addressed.”
He also stated that Sedetur, the State Attorney General’s Office and the Secretariat of Citizen Security have a security table to accompany and assist tourists in case of any incident, but also to contextualize who these attacks are directed at “because it is organized crime that is attacking our society,” said Cueto Riestra, as reported by Noticaribe.
He also commented that, although a significant number of tourists still arrive, “we must work to ensure that these types of events do not occur, but we must also put them into context and ask the media to be objective in their handling of reports because they can affect the destination,” he commented.
Cueto Riestra also pointed out that the Travel warning specifies that extreme caution should be exercised outside of tourist areas where the foreign visiting population is concentrated.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxQuintana Roo hoteliers projected an occupancy rate of over 80% for this summer, but apparently there are several reasons that have played against them, which is why they have only reached 78%, as recently announced by Jesús Almaguer, president of the Association of Hotels of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres. (QRoo: hoteliers list reasons for low occupancy this summer).
“Unfortunately, hurricane Beryl arrived early and did change people’s perception, trends, dates were extended, postponed. We see a September better than last year and we hope to recover more of the production in August than we expected for July,” Almaguer said at the time.
