In an effort to combat the environmental challenges facing the region, Municipal President Blanca Merari inaugurated the new sargassum transfer site in Puerto Morelos. This project, in collaboration with the company Oceanbiosphere and the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment of the Government of Quintana Roo, represents a significant step towards a more sustainable municipality.
The mayor stressed the importance of this initiative to address the problem of sargassum, which not only affects the natural and touristic beauty of the Mexican Caribbean, but also marine life and the well-being of coastal communities. “The inauguration of this site is crucial in the fight against one of the greatest environmental challenges we face,” said Merari.
The new transfer site operated by Oceanbiosphere will be dedicated to transforming sargassum collected from beaches into compost, using an advanced treatment process. This process includes cleaning the seaweed to remove contaminants, followed by shredding and mixing it with organic waste and microorganisms, resulting in high-quality compost suitable for improving crops.
Biologist Benito Morán, head of the Undersecretariat of Environmental Management and Protection, explained that the location of the site in an old sascabera south of Puerto Morelos was carefully selected to minimize the environmental impact. He also highlighted that this project is the result of collaboration between the three levels of government and the private sector.
For his part, Gerardo Mora, director of Oceanbiosphere, explained that the plant is the only one in the state with a valid Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), ensuring compliance with all environmental and safety requirements.
As reported by REPORTUR.mxMara Lezama, during the Mexico-European Union National Forum held in July, called for working together with the private sector to turn sargassum from being a liability into an economic asset, such as biofuel and other developments with macroalgae. (QRoo: Lezama with the private sector will turn sargassum into an asset).
