Mariely Poncianoexecutive director of the NGO New Life for Waste (Nuvi), said that the recycling process of plastics and other solid waste helps the environment and the country’s image, which represents a great opportunity for tourism.
“This impacts in two ways, first the environmental issue, and second that having a cleaner city benefits tourism,” he added.
He emphasized that “when we receive tourists who are used to separating at the fountain, and they do not find separation trash cans, they find it strange,” according to El Caribe.
He explained that since 2020, more than 82 million plastic bottles have been recovered in the country, which is equivalent to approximately 5,500 truckloads.
“You might think it’s a lot of plastic, but it’s not even 5% of what we generate,” he said.
He indicated that in the DR, 88 thousand tons of plastic waste are generated per year, and although some steps have been taken in favor of sustainability, Nuvi seeks to create a culture of reduction and reuse of plastic bottles in the national territory. and in turn impact sectors such as tourism.
For this reason, Ponciano highlighted the agreement signed by Nuvi, the Coca-Cola company and its bottling partner, Bepensa Dominicana, in collaboration with the National Association of Hotels and Tourism of the Dominican Republic (Asonahores) and the Santo Domingo Hotel Association (AHSD) with the aim of collecting PET plastic in hotels.
