The Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, and the mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía, held an inspection day this Wednesday to assess the state in which the New Market of Duarte and Villas Agrícolas, with a view to future intervention of both infrastructures to improve conditions for the merchants and consumers.
“He New Market de la Duarte was originally designed to house 800 merchantsbut currently operates with more than 6,000. We have as objective transform it in an establishment modern and orderly, which provides security to sellers who come to work honestly, as well as provide adequate space for the thousands of buyers who come to purchase their fresh produce,” said Paliza according to a press release from the Presidency.
The document adds that with this plan, the Government seeks modernizeorganize and renovate the market, integrating social, cultural and tourist areas into the city, with sustainable commercial infrastructure and basic services such as drinking water, energy, security and connectivity. Furthermore, the interconnection between these markets and Merca Santo Domingo.
It indicates that the future intervention will benefit more than 300,000 population from surrounding sectors, such as La Zurza, Ensanche Capotillo, Simón Bolívar and Villas Agrícolas, promoting decent spaces and insurance for commerce, as well as a sustainable model that includes the management of solid waste and the installation of renewable energy.

The president issued decree 357-24, which creates the public trust for real estate development, administration, investment and source of payment, which will be called Trust Public for the Modernization of Markets of Abastos de Santo Domingo (Firmeca-SD).
