Over the past year, the meetings industry in Mexico has made significant progress. Michel Wohlmuth, president of the Mexican Meetings Industry Council (COMIR), highlighted that the MICE industry remains crucial to the country’s economic development. The sector currently generates more than 1 million direct and indirect jobs and this figure is projected to increase in the coming months. They are also taking steps to attract young people to the sector and promote distinctions such as the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP).
In terms of contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), he said the sector reached 1.62% in 2023, an increase from the 1.52% recorded in 2022. He predicted that in 2024, the segment will close with an increase compared to last year. This growth underlines the growing importance of the sector in the national economy.
Wohlmuth noted that the impact of the sector is not limited to the economy; it also plays a key role in promoting tourism by attracting congresses, conventions and incentive Trips. Strategic alliances with entities such as the Union of Secretaries of Tourism of Mexico (Asetur) and collaboration with state tourism associations have been fundamental in this process. Participation in international events and attracting investments reinforce Mexico’s position as a great destination in the meetings field.
A highlight of COMIR’s current management, according to Wohlmuth, is the focus on sustainability. In the last year, 13 concrete actions have been implemented in this area, receiving recognition from the Government of Guanajuato. COMIR continues to promote responsible public policies, including a food recovery program to mitigate waste and support those facing food insecurity in Mexico.
Looking to the future, COMIR has ambitious plans to continue strengthening the industry. Among the outstanding projects are participation in Fitur and the redesign of the Tianguis Turístico in Baja California. In addition, measures are being taken to attract young people to the sector and promote distinctions such as the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP), awarded by the Convention Industry Council, one of the most recognized organizations of its kind worldwide.
