The First District Court in Yucatan decided to maintain the definitive suspension of works on Section 5 South of the Maya Train, despite the efforts of the federal government to demonstrate that environmental damage is reversible.

This resolution represents a major obstacle to the advancement of the project, one of the emblematic works of the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).

The federal judge determined that the evidence presented by the National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) and other federal agencies is not sufficient to lift the precautionary measure. According to the ruling, the report submitted by these entities does not comply with the environmental conditions necessary to guarantee that the works will not cause irreparable damage to the caves and the ecosystem of the region.

The judge argued that although authorities assured that potential damages could be reversed, this assertion was not sufficient to lift the suspension.

The case is part of indirect protection file 1003/2022, promoted by residents of Solidaridad, who oppose the construction of Section 5 South of the Mayan Train, which covers 64 kilometers from Playa del Carmen to Tulum. This legal dispute has generated an intense debate on the balance between economic development and environmental preservation in the region.

Despite this suspension, President López Obrador has reaffirmed that the Maya Train will be completed by early September 2024, Sipse reports.

For its part, sections 6 and 7 of the Maya Train will not be ready to be inaugurated before the end of AMLO’s administration. And with just over a month left until the end of his six-year term, there is still no track on several kilometers of both sections and even the stations report less than 50% progress, as he anticipated.
