Members of the Sélvame del Tren collective sent a communication to the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, to tour the caverns affected by the works of the Mayan Train in section 5 between Cancún and Tulum.
They point out that the thousands of piles that support the work have perforated the caverns, have been contaminated by rust and cement due to the introduction of concrete and rod columns, covered with a metal cover, as reported by El Economista.
“Propaganda and demagogy multiply ignorance, foster division and distance us from solutions. Here is the reality, come and confront it and find in us allies so that ecocide does not spread,” reads the message from the environmentalists.
Activist Guillermo D’Christy said in a video that “we need to find a balance between the damage caused by the Mayan Train and what remains; we need to stop the real estate development that is destroying this entire area, an important heritage of Mexico and humanity.”
As reported by REPORTUR.mxIn April, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), in a morning press conference, admitted the contamination of a single cenote drilled for the construction of the Maya Train in Quintana Roo, as demonstrated by a video showing the situation, which is why he said at the time that it was an accident and an isolated case. “We are protecting. That incident had to do with an accident that we are remedying, what you say, we already have a remediation solution for that site,” AMLO said at the time. However, other cases are known where cenotes, caverns and underground rivers have been impacted.
