A lawyer was arrested in Mexico City for his alleged involvement in an extortion case against the construction manager of a luxury Hotel being built in Cancun. The arrest was made by personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) in collaboration with the National Anti-Kidnapping Coordination (Conase), after an arrest warrant was issued.
According to information provided by the FGE, the detained lawyer, Pablo Andrei Zamudio Diaz, had filed an injunction without legal basis alleging environmental impacts of the Hotel‘s construction, in order to extort the project’s developers.
It was learned that the initial appeal filed by Andrei was rejected, but he finally managed to obtain a definitive suspension of the work, which is a Hotel in Puerto Cancún, which resulted in an approximate economic loss of 290 million pesos (16 million dollars) and the impact of about a thousand jobs.
In March of this year, Andrei “N” demanded from the director of the work the sum of 45 million pesos (2.5 million dollars) to withdraw the injunction. Later, on June 4, he reduced his demand to 20 million pesos (one million 100 thousand dollars). The last demand, made on June 26, 2024, amounted to 500 thousand dollars, which the detainee demanded under the threat of using a firearm against the victim.
In light of these events, the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Kidnapping and Extortion Crimes requested an arrest warrant against Zamudio Diaz due to his probable participation in the crime of extortion. The order was executed in Mexico City, where the corresponding proceedings were carried out before transferring the detainee to Cancun, where he was admitted to the Social Reintegration Center of the Benito Juarez municipality.
