He was the founder of the famous orchestra Félix del Rosario and his Wizards of Rhythm. Not only did he stand out as a merengue player, but also ventured into jazz. Félix del Rosario played the saxophone and also sang choruses in his orchestra.
He was born on July 12, 1934 in San Francisco de Macoris. He began studying music at the age of 15 at the Municipal Music School from his hometown. At a young age, he emigrated to Saint Dominicwhere he entered the Navy Bandreaching the rank of officer.
In 1953, he became part of Antonio Morel’s orchestra. Shortly after, he worked with Amado Vásquez, Agustín Mercier and Rafael Solano.
In 1964, he founded his own group, Félix del Rosario y sus Magos del Ritmo, which would remain in force for more than 20 years in Dominican popular music.
Among the musicians who were part of this group, Antonio Peña, Papito Bazán, Quico stood out.
Marcano, and Manuel Perdomo, as well as the singers Frank Cruz and “El Negrito Macabí.” Years later, he founded the Santo Domingo All Star orchestra and the Félix Group.
Among the most popular merengues he performed were “Papá Bocó” (composed by Manuel Sánchez Acosta), “Víctor y Memelo”, “Mal Pelao”, “La Caperucita” and “El Secuestro”. He also composed songs that fused with Afro-Cuban jazz, such as “Carmen.”
He received several recognitions and distinctions, among them: “Meritorious Son” of his hometown in 1973, a Special Cassandra and the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sánchez y Mella in 1995. He was married to Mrs. Nelly Labrada.
