The Organization of States Americans (OAS) asked the Advice of Security of the United Nations to “urgently” support the request for Haiti to transform the Multinational Mission to Support the Security (MMSS) in a peacekeeping operation under a mandate from the UN.
He Advice Permanent OAS unanimously approved a resolution on Wednesday in response to a request for support for that idea raised by the Advice Presidential of Transition (CPT) of Haitia body created this year to address the crisis that the Caribbean country is experiencing at all levels and prepare the ground for democratic elections.
“The resolution we present transcends the interests of a single nation, it symbolizes cohesion and the collective responsibilities of the states of the region to accompany Haition the journey towards peace and institutional governance,” declared Gandy Thomas, ambassador of Haiti in the OAS.
The objective of Haiti with the change of MMSSwhich began its journey this year led by Kenya, through a United Nations Peacekeeping Operation, is to “provide more sustainable support for long-term stability and security, the rule of law and democratic governance in Haiti“.
He Advice Permanent OAS recognizes in the text “the support financialtechnical and logistic“that some members provide to the MMSS and urges others to “join efforts to achieve full deployment of personnel” of that contingent and to “continue to coordinate in-kind and material contributions through existing mechanisms, including the United Nations Trust Fund and the International Coordination Security“.
He also recognizes the contributions of the partners regional and international organizations to the Multinational Mission to Support Security in Haiti and highlights the importance of supporting the efforts of the Haitian National Police to “reestablish law and order, in order to allow a return to democratic governance in the country.”
The resolution concludes by reaffirming “the commitment of the OAS to support Haiti throughout this period, and advocate for resources and additional attention for the social and economic reconstruction of Haitiwith emphasis on peacebuilding, democratic governance, political stability and sustainable development.”
This week the CPT dismissed Gary Conille as prime minister of Haiti and appointed in his replacement Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, who this Wednesday renewed his commitment to do everything possible “to guarantee the safety of lives, property and all infrastructure, both private and public.”
Fils-Aimé spoke in this way about the attacks carried out on Monday by bands armed against commercial planes of US airlines, which has led the US to ban Flights to Haiti for 30 days.
“Faced with this serious situation, the head of the Government has given formal instructions to the law enforcement forces, who have reacted quickly to regain control of the (Port-au-Prince) airport and its surroundings,” Fils-Aimé said in a statement.
The bands armed who try to seize power in Haiti and that this week they have launched a new wave of violence have caused the death of almost 5,000 people in the first nine months of 2024, according to figures from the UN.
According to figures published on Wednesday by the Organization International for Migrations (IOM), the violence of the bands armed which began last Monday has already displaced a total of 4,372 peopleof which 3,586 in Port-au-Prince, 488 in Tabarre and 298 in Delmas.
